        In each case, the word clued on the left is identical to the word clued on the right, except for a single letter.  Where you have an A in the left-hand word, the right-hand word has a P instead, such as "oat" becoming "opt."  To get from one word to the next, therefore, you have to go from A to P, cluing the word "atop."
